I regularly fly with low budget companies and I didnt have problems up to now. I think that the only difference is that these big airlines offer more commodities during the flight and that food and refreshments are more luxurious. When it comes to safety I think its tied! There are numerous sites where you can book your flight. I never do that online, but Im an old-fashioned man and Im quite distrustful of these new technologies and the internet. So, I always call or go personally, just to be on the safe side. If your father is still concerned, tell him that on the internet he can find a list of airlines that are approved by the USA flight control and regarded as safe. And book a flight with one of the companies that are not on the black list.
