Apartment in Rio 5-6 months

I'm planning to spend 5-6 months in Rio, learning the language and absorbing the culture. Ideally I would find a cheap apartment or pay someone for a room in theirs. What is the best approach to this? I was thinking of booking a hotel for the first week, and I would spend that week looking for the apartment. Is this a good idea? Thanks.
