Hello, there. Im afraid your friend wasnt pulling your leg. The Maoists or members of the Communist Party of Nepal announced several years ago that they didnt want Americans in their country. As a response, the State Department has issued a public announcement about risks to all American citizens visiting Nepal. However, there are still American tourists that visit this country. They are safer if they dont exit standard tourist routes. There are even about 100 members of US troupes. Even if you are stopped by a Maoist and asked if you are American, dont say you are. Dont go to the villages on your own. This is of course if you dont change your mind about the trip. Good luck!
